County and city could share costs for crossing guards

May 8, 2006

Albany-- The Dougherty County School System will soon have to fit the payroll of more than 50 crossing guards into its budget and it wants the city and county to help.

For more than 30 years, the Albany Police Department paid for the Dougherty County School System crossing guards. Last year, APD notified the school board this would be the last year the department would do that.

The school system plans to ask the city and county commissions to help with the $400,000 a year pricetag.

School board Chairman Willie Weaver says the school board doesn't mind paying a third of the costs and plans to have a joint meeting with city and county commissioners soon.

All three groups must set next year's budgets by June 30th.
