Sumter County -- Aircraft and ATVs join the search for a Sumter County escapee.

The search for 31-year-old Ronald Smith is centered around a wooded area in Sumter County near Hooks Mill Road and Highway 118. In addition to state troopers and sheriff's deputies, a helicopter and a private plane are circling the area to aid ground units.

Game wardens are using 4-wheelers to criss-cross the area. Smith fled from a work detail at Georgia Southwestern University in Americus about 11:40 this morning. He was serving time at Sumter Correctional Institute for stealing a car.

Smith is described as a white man, 6 feet tall and weighing 240 pounds. He has brown hair and eyes and has tattoos on both arms.

Anyone spotting Smith should call local law enforcement or the Department of Corrections hotline at 404-651-6311.
