Albany -- City utility crews are training for a unusual competition. Water, Gas, and Light linemen practiced for the upcoming 12th Annual Georgia Lineman Rodeo.

They scaled utility poles, replaced heavy transformers by hand, and practiced rescuing a hurt man.

Superintendent Jimmy Norman says the competition is a fun way to train linemen for the dangerous work they face during storms. "They get the practice and the experience of working off of hooks and doing things by hand," Norman said. "A lot of times during hurricanes and tornados, they can't get the equipment where they need it. They have to result to this type of work to get the lights back on."

Albany is sending two teams to the competition, May 6th, at the National Fairgrounds in Perry.
