Students learn about separation of powers

May 1, 2006

Albany - May 1st, or May Day is also celebrated as law day across the United States. It's a time to teach students and the general public the importance of the legal system.

State Senator Michael Meyer von Bremen engaged students at Westover High School in an exercise to demonstrate the separation of powers.

He says, "Their day in and day out lives are affected by the law. Many of them are seniors and they're about to go out into the real world and they need to understand how it works."

Meyer von Bremen split students into three different groups to demonstrate the branches of Government and discuss a law they thought needed to be passed.
