Injured Animals Get New Home

April 28, 2006

Tift County -- Forty roosters involved in a cockfighting match outside of Omega have a new home.

The Tift County Animal Control department says an animal rights group called "In Defense of Animals" rescued the injured roosters and transported them to the Eastern Shore Sanctuary and Education Center in Maryland. The group will provide medical care for the birds.

Police arrested 21 men on Easter Sunday for their involvement in the cockfighting match and charged them with aggravated animal cruelty.

That is a felony in Georgia.
