Famed Coach speaks at Darton banquet

April 26, 2006

Albany - The athletic season is not yet over but it has already been a great year for the Darton College Cavaliers.

A national runner-up finish in women's soccer and next month most likely a second straight national title in golf.

And don't forget the baseball and softball teams have high hopes entering their respective conference tournaments.

Darton honored all of their athletes on Wednesday night at their annual sports banquet.

The guest speaker knows a thing about winning championships. He is former high school football coach Bill Yoast.

The same Bill Yoast from the movie "Remember the Titans".

The popular movie tells the story of how a high school football team dealt with the issue of integration and won a state championship under coaches Bill Yoast and Herman Boone, who in the film was played by Denzel Washington.

Normally, movies are based on books.

But in this case, Bill Yoast's life story is now out in a book written by one of his former players. Yoast's book is called "Remember This Titan" and it tells the tale of a titan of a man.

Yoast said "My life born in Alabama picking cotton at nine years old and my dad was a hobo and very poor kid. It made my transition to 1971 pretty easy."

Bill Yoast was part of three state championship teams at T.C. Williams High in Alexandria, Virginia.

He retired from coaching in 1996.
