Incumbent lawmakers face challengers

April 25, 2006

Albany - Just five days after State Representative Richard Royal announced he's switching to the Republican party, a Democrat has qualified to run for his seat. 26 year old Corey Wimberly of Camilla will run for House Seat 171. Wimberly is listed on the party's website as an operator services manager.

Royal hasn't yet qualified, but he announced last Thursday that, for the first time, he will run as a Republican. Royal has held that house seat for 20 years.

Albany's Lawrence Roberts is making a run to get back his house seat. Roberts was defeated two years ago by Freddie Powell Sims. Senator Michael Meyer von Bremen of Albany has a Republican challenger - Camilla minister Joe Thomas has qualified for the District 12 seat. And

Democratic Senator Tim Golden of Valdosta is being challenged by former Lowndes County Commission chairman Norman Bennett who's running as a Republican.
