Homerville - The Southern Christian Leadership Conference will launch a new chapter of the civil rights organization in South Georgia.
The SCLC was called to Clinch County to address social injustice issues of the county jail and government. The jail has been charging inmates a daily jail fee of $18.00. County officials said the fine was their way of punishing criminals for their crimes instead of the taxpayers.
Last week, a federal judge ruled that the county must stop charging that fee and ordered the county to pay an estimated 300 former inmates back.
The SCLC will host a meeting and rally at Prayer Garden Church of God in Christ on West Forest Avenue in Homerville at 5:00 Sunday night.
