Church celebrates centennial anniversary

April 23, 2006

Leary -- A big celebration today for one South Georgia Church, a celebration 100 years in the making.

Eureka Missionary Baptist Church in Leary has been holding events all month long to commemorate the church's centennial anniversary.

It's a joyful day for Eureka Missionary Baptist Church.

"One hundred years, we're celebrating our centennial anniversary this church was founded in 1906," said Sonya Carswell.

A purple ribbon marked the milestone for the congregation as a symbol of God's work.

"To me it shows again growth. For any church to be in existence for 100 years is truly a blessing," said Darwin Williams.

With a message from God shared each day, it's a place where this congregation feels at home.

"I just love being a member here just the atmosphere, everybody's like family," said Kristy Turner.

"I went here pretty much all my life, this is the only church I've really been to," said TJ Himes.

For the members of Eureka Missionary Baptist Church, it's been a place for family and friends to grow with God.

"We're trying to get ready and geared up to lead this church into tommorow. That we may continue to be a pillar in this community," said Pastor Gregory Moye.

With a centennial anniversary celebrated Sunday, the church will soon have a new place grow for the next 100 years. Church leaders hope to have groundbreaking on their new church location as early as this summer.

The old sanctuary won't be forgotten. It will become a Youth Outreach Center.

Events all month long have amounted to the big celebration Sunday, with two church services and two big dinners.
