Valdosta - People across the nation will clean up their communities this weekend as part of the Great American Cleanup.

In Lowndes County, volunteers will work to beautify several neighborhoods Saturday. Staging sites will be set up at Macedonia First Baptist Church on J.L. Lowmax Drive and Camp Relisto on Williams School Road. Last year, volunteers collected about 31 tons of trash.

Valdosta firefighters will also be checking smoke detectors in homes around those areas between 8:30 and noon.

"It's really an eye opening experience to get out and help these neighborhoods in need and it reflects on the whole community and makes the whole community look better," said Aaron Strickland, Director of Keep Lowndes Valdosta Beautiful.

If you want to volunteer for the cleanup, meet at either of the staging sites at 8:30 Saturday morning.
