Cedar Springs - 59-year old Jerry L. Widner was a mechanic at the Cedar Springs Georgia Pacific plant. Monday, during an outage, he was moved from the garage, his normal work area, to the pulp mill to assist workers in that area.

Around 9:20AM, a release valve opened and Widner fell off a platform in the pulp mill, to a level about 20 feet below. He suffered severe trauma to the head and was taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center where he died about an hour later.

OSHA is investigating the accident. This is the first employee death at the plant since the death of Walter Kincey in August 2003. OSHA issued Georgia Pacific 18 serious citations and fined the company $102,000.
