Albany -- A pedestrian who was hit by a Dougherty County school bus this afternoon, was killed.
The accident happened about 4:00PM at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Second Avenue.
School bus #124 hit what we believe to be an adult man. The bus driver is Earl Dawson, who has been driving for the school system for about 15 years, according to the transportation director.
Dawson was shaken by the accident, and was being treated for hypertension. the driver says he was stopped at the intersection waiting for the light to change, when apparently the victim just stepped off the curb, and right into the path of the bus.
The bus transports children from Albany Middle School, and was empty at the time.
The person who was struck was rushed a block up the street to Phoebe Putney Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
As a routine matter, the driver was drug-tested, which is school system policy when an incident of this magnitude occurs.
