Albany - When Albany State athletic director and head basketball coach John I. Davis announced his resignation two weeks ago, it was assumed that Davis was stepping down on his own terms.
That does not appear to be the case with Albany State announcing that Dr. Joshua W. Murfree has been named interim athletics director.
A school spokesperson said Dr. Murfree assumed the duties of interim athletic director last week.
Dr. Joseph Murfree is chairman of Albany State's department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work and serves as Albany State's faculty athletics representative to the NCAA.
When Coach John I. Davis submitted his resignation two and a half weeks ago, he planned to step down on June 30th which is the end of the current state budget year.
Davis however clearned out his office late last week.
Coach Davis would not comment Wednesday night on his status at Albany State but did says he would talk at a later date.
Davis left Monroe High six years ago to take over an Albany State basketball program that had won five games the previous two seasons and an athletic department that had just been placed on a four year probation by the NCAA.
Last year, the ASU basketball team won the SIAC regular season title and the Albany State athletic program has won eight conference titles since the fall of 2004.
Albany State University president Dr. Everett Freeman was not at home when we phoned looking for a comment on his decision to not allow Coach Davis to work out his notice.
