Coffee County Sheriff resigns

March 30, 2006

Douglas--Coffee County Sheriff Rob Smith will resign effective April 15th. District Attorney Rick Currie confirmed Thursday night that Smith sent a resignation letter to Governor Sonny Perdue Wednesday.  A spokesperson for the Governor told WALB News Ten Thursday night they had not yet received the letter.

Last week, a grand jury indicted Smith on eight counts including use of inmate labor for private gain and theft by conversion. The County Probate Judge will appoint an interim sheriff once the resignation is official.
