Albany -- It's that time of year for allergy sufferers. Pollen is in the air and for many that means itching, sneezing and wheezing.

Local pharmacies have seen a pickup in business for the allergy medications.

Many people wonder if over the counter relief is just as effective as prescribed pills. Pharmacists say that paying more doesn't mean better treatment for symptoms.

"Some of the over the counter products are just as effective as prescription medication. Some of these these medicines were prescription only up until a couple of years ago," said pharmacist Stephanie Sceals.

Pharmacists do warn however that if you use over the counter relief, make sure you check with your doctor for any interactions with other medication you may be taking.
