Stream buffer may decrease

March 22, 2006

Albany -- Democrats don't like a republican plan to reduce the amount of buffer zone that protects Georgia's waterways from pollution and development.

The bill would reduce the buffer zone to 25 feet for most waterways, 50 feet for trout streams, and 150 feet for watersheds that provid drinking water.

Supporters say it's a property rights issue. Critics say it's an environmental issue that could result in septic tanks putting drinking water at risk.

The bill may reach the full house later this week.
