Lee apartments burn

March 21, 2006

Lee County -- Three apartment units of the Spring Lake Apartments off US 19 in South Lee County were heavily damaged by fire about 2:30 this morning.

Stephanie Manos says she was awakened by popping sounds outside her door, and found a fire raging in a stairwell. Manos said she began waking her neighbors, who all got out of the building safely.

Three apartments on the top floor were heavily fire-damaged, and six units below them were damaged by smoke and water. There are 18 units in the building.

State Arson Investigators are on the scene, looking into the possibility of an intentional fire, but they are also examining the possibility of a lightning strike.

Nine families are having to vacate their apartments, but property owner Pace Burt is assisting them with new places to live.

No one was injured in the fire.
