No criminal charges against park ranger

March 17, 2006

Cook County - Criminal charges won't be pressed against a South Georgia park ranger who shot and killed a man in December.

Chet Powell shot Curtis Anthony Wright of Adel after he caught him
breaking into a coke machine at Reed Bingham State Park. According to
witnesses, Wright went after Powell with a screwdriver when he tried to
arrest him, and he later reached for Powell's gun when they were struggling.

Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Miller says he found no
criminal conduct on Powell's part, and his actions were clearly justified.
