Valdosta - A South Georgia town wants public input on an idea to alleviate traffic congestion.

Traffic engineers in Valdosta want to make Ashley Street one-way northbound and Patterson Street one-way southbound. The change would affect a three mile stretch between Five Points and Magnolia Drive.

Engineers say it will reduce congestion on Ashley and Patterson, and prevent motorists from detouring into residential neighborhoods. "The congestion is causing many to circumvent and go onto other streets, traffic counts are increasing on other streets," said Von Shipman.

The city is holding a series of public hearings to get feedback from motorists before council votes on the project. The first will be Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 until 5:00 at the City Hall Annex Multi Purpose Room.
