Valdosta - A Florida man is behind bars for an attempted car jacking.

Just before 9:00 Firday morning, a woman was walking to her car at the intersection of Valley and Toombs Streets in Valdosta when she was approached by a man holding a knife.  Thirty-four year old Charles Escoffier forced her into the car with him, but she managed to jump out before he took off.

When she started screaming, he got out of her car and ran to his vehicle. Witnesses and police chased him to Savannah Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

"Witnesses were instrumental in us catching him, the officers, both city and county were also instrumental becasue they were able to listen to what the witnesses said and catch up with him to take him into custody," said Lt.  Eugene Bell, Jr.

Escoffier is in the Lowndes County Jail charged with armed robbery and attempted kidnapping.
