Valdosta - A new study by the Georgia Department of Human Resources shows that one in four third graders is obese.

The study found that 43 percent of third graders in Georgia are obese, with girls and African-American children having the highest risk of being overweight.

The Lowndes County Partnership for Health has formed a Childhood Obesity Task Force to help reduce the statistics in their area.  "They're hoping to get together with youth organizations within the community to boost some different activities and get kids out of the house, away from the television and video games, and out being active," said Jennifer Steedley.

The task force is working with pediatricians and school nutritionists in Lowndes County to create healthier school menus and snack options for students.
