King saluted at Civic Center

January 16, 2006

Albany-- Millions of people across the country are remembering slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, who would have turned 77 yesterday.

The Good Life City is honoring the civil rights leader with The 2006 King Celebration at the James H. Gray Civic Center. This is the tenth year for the event celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, but it's also honoring our military.

Tonight's theme is A Celebration of Freedom, and they'll pay tribute to Freedom Fighters with guns in the military and Freedom Fighters who led the Civil rights movement.

The Civic Center tonight is decorated with artwork from Children of the Dream. It's a youth art Exhibition featuring artwork from Dougherty County School Students.

Tonight Rear Admiral Anthony Winn of Arlington will speak about Veterans in Military Service that paved the way for others to join.

Tonight's events will also include a play performed by one of the Americus Freedom fighters John Perdew. Event organizers say it's important for people to hear these stories.
