Woman dies in head-on collision

Irwin County- A South Georgia woman dies after her vehicle collides head-on with a tractor trailer.

Forty-nine year old Betty Wakefield of Milan was headed south on Georgia Highway 35 in Irwin County just after 11 Wednesday morning.

Troopers say Wakefield veered into the northbound lane and slammed head-on into a tractor-trailer being driven by 34 year old David Holmes of Abbeville, Alabama.

Wakefield was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Holmes was taken to Irwin County hospital with minor injuries.

    Lee County Fire Chief David Forrester said there were two people in the home, and they saw one person in the front yard.  Two people in the home were transported to Phoebe Putney.
