Darlington Decides

December 19, 2005

Valdosta - Former Valdosta high school football coach Rick Darlington has a new job, and it's his old job.

Before heading to Valdosta, Darlington was the head coach at Apopka in Florida, and returns there after stepping away from the Wildcats last month.

Valdosta won the region and advanced to the state championship in his first year on the job in 2003, with Darlington named Class AAAAA state coach of the year.

Since then the Wildcats have gone just 15-10, failing to advance beyond the third round of the playoffs.

Cross-town rival Lowndes has won the region and state championship each of the past two seasons.

Darlington coached at Apopka from 1999 to 2002, winning the schools first state championship in 2001.

He'll take over at the suburban Orlando school at the start of the new year.
