Lakeland - People in one South Georgia town want to take their school board chairman out of office. But a judge denied their request for a recall election.
A group of concerned parents in Lakeland started a petition against school board chairman Phillip Connell and got about 150 signatures on it. The school system was recently put on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation, and they think Connell is responsible. They say he oversteps his boundaries and interferes too much with the daily operations of the school.
Thursday, a judge ruled that their petition for a recall election was invalid, but they say they're not giving up.
"Mr. Connell has usurped his ability to act as a chairman and gone beyond the boundaries in the things he has done and said," said Lynn Crummey.
The group can submit another petition for a recall election in six months.
