Colquitt County- We're told a man was trying to break into a soft drink machine when he was caught by Park Ranger Chet Powell. When Powell tried to arrest him, the suspect apparently went for Powell's pistol.
It's an unusual site at Reed Bingham State Park. The usual quiet and serene atmosphere is now filled with investigators and crime scene tape.
Sources tell us that a man who lives near the park spotted a man trying to break into a coke machine this morning. He went and told Powell, and that's when he headed to the beach pavilion across the pond to check things out.
"During the attempted arrest, the suspect was shot and killed and died at the scene," said Ronnie Eakins, Regional Park Manager.
The man apparently went for Powell's gun and that's when he shot him. The GBI is working the case, but no one would give us any information on the shooting today.
Powell has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete. Investigators will be back at Reed Bingham Friday, but the park will remain open and no activities have been canceled.
The name of the man who was shot has not been released.
