Valdosta - The Valdosta Fire Department is kicking off a six week smoke detector campaign.

Every Saturday for the next six weeks, they'll knock on doors around the city to make sure people have smoke detectors in their homes. And for people who don't have the devices, firefighters will donate and install one.

"Statistics show that people who have a working smoke alarm, their chances of dying in a home fire is reduced by 50 percent, its actually cut in half, so that's why we go out and do this," said Fire Chief J.D. Rice.

Firefighters hope to cover every home in the city by the end of the campaign.
