Albany- Students at Lake Park Elementary enjoyed a cookout and ice cream sundaes for lunch. The school was one of five in Dougherty County recognized by the state for promoting excellence.

Lake Park received a gold award because 97% of the students either met or exceeded standards on the CRCT last year.

"That's a direct result of the hard work everybody, the children and their parents taking their education seriously. Then of course I have a wonderful staff here at Lake Park," says principal Catherine Whitfield.

"It's not because the state tells them to do it, it's not because the federal government tells them to do it, it's is because their heart tells them to do it," says state board of education member Peggy Nielsen.

The Dougherty County School system was also named as one of only four Title I Distinguished School Districts in the state.
