Sycamore- The Turner County probation dentition center was built to relieve overcrowding, but it still sits idle. It was supposed to bring nearly 65 new jobs to the area, and thousands each month in utilities to the city of Sycamore.
Mayor Wayne Woodruff says corrections officials told him budget cuts prevented the state from opening the center. There's no word when it may open. Woodruff says a petition signed by 350 voters urging the state to move ahead went unanswered.
"We sent the petitions to the Governor's office and the Lt. Governor's office, and I even made a phone call myself to both of the offices and I've had no response by either one, and with the upcoming election coming on this would be a feather in one of their cap," Woodruff says.
Woodruff says he feels Sycamore has been bypassed because a similar center in Barnesville, built after the Turner County facility is already open.
