Thomasville, Georgia-- Friends and family are mourning the loss of a long-time magistrate judge in Thomas County.

Grace Garland died Tuesday night at Archbold Hospital in Thomasville. Co-workers say she recently discovered that she had cancer, which spread rapidly.

They add that Garland was an absolute joy to work with. "She was very special, very dear to me and the girls here at this office. She was like a mother figure to us. Whenever we needed the support we needed she was always there to pat us on the back and let us know everything is going to be all right," says clerk of court, Linda Bradley.

Garland had been a magistrate judge since the seventies, until she was unseated last year. She had also served as president of the state Judicial Council.
