Adel - A mechanical failure sparked a fire at a South Georgia manufacturing plant early Thursday morning.

A storage bin holding about 2,000 tons of dry wood shavings at Sierra Pine caught fire around 2:00. The business manufactures particle board.

Firefighters say it was fully engulfed when they got there, and it took about eight hours to put all the hot spots out. They think the fire started when a bearing went out in one of the transfer belts. "There's a transfer belt that moves the material from one end to another and if you get any type of fire on the belt or motor, then it just spreads throughout the entire bin," said Barry Marshall, Operations Director.

Workers at Sierra Pine say the fire destroyed a lot of the wood shavings but didn't cause any major damage to the storage bin or equipment.
