Albany -- The Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit has a new commander. Captain Darryl Smith will now run the drug unit.

The 40 year old Smith has worked in the Albany Police Department for 19 years.

He says the Drug Unit's work is critical in cutting crime in Dougherty County. Smith said "The drug unit is very important. All aspects of crime someway or another usually resort back to drugs of some type."

Smith takes command December Fifth. He succeeds Major Bill Berry, who left earlier this year to become the Drug Squad Commander in Henry County.
