Ocilla- Benny Merritt is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated stalking.
Sheriff Donnie Yaughn says deputies began pursuing Merritt Wednesday afternoon after he fired several shots in the air. He then tried to run off the road a woman he had been stalking.
Deputies and troopers chased Merritt for about 30 miles across both Irwin and Ben Hill counties.
"The speeds got up to 95 miles per hour which was very dangerous. GSP did a PIT maneuver and stopped the chase," Sheriff Yaughn says.
State troopers also plan to charge Merritt with as many as eight traffic violations. He is being held in the Irwin County detention center.
