Albany- SOWEGA Council on Aging officials say there are at least 6,000 grandparents who are raising one or more grandchildren.
Wednesday, the agency held their first Kinship Care support group. It gives the caregivers a chance to talk about issues and get information about resources to make their jobs a little easier.
"A lot of folks are struggling financially, children need support with school activities and sometimes emotional and behavioral issue and lot of times the grandparents aren't quite sure where to turn to get the resources they need," says Kinship Care Coordinator Nancy Harper.
The Kinship Care program is open to anyone in SOWEGA Council's 14-county area who is a grandparent or relative caregiver raising a minor child.
