Valdosta - Federal funding is helping improve the quality of history education in South Georgia.

The Coastal Plains Regional Education Service Agency recently received almost one million dollars for the U.S. Department of Education. They've partnered with Valdosta State University and will use the money to provide a variety of continuing education programs for history teachers in 10 South Georgia Counties.

"The budget has funds for all kinds of activities, including travel," said Dr. Paul Riggs, VSU Professor. "We're going to take them to the Constitution Center in Philadelphia, its one of the themes of this grant so were going to take them to Philadelphia to show them the site."

The funding comes from the "Teaching American History" Grants Program under the U.S. Department of Education.
