Albany -- Delvin Sherrod Hawkins was charged Friday with having sex with a 15-year-old student at Monroe high school on September 12th. He’s charged with statutory rape and sexual assault of a person in custody.

The Dougherty County School Board has been listening to evidence since noon, trying to determine if he will lose his job.

The 32-year-old teacher came with dozens of supporters to the hearing Monday. He is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old female student in the storage closet of his classroom.

His attorney, Maurice King, has tried several times unsuccessfully to get the hearing dismissed. He still contends that the allegations against his client are false, and the statements on two videotapes with the accuser and her friend are not consistent.

The School Board plans to call half a dozen witnesses, but they've only heard from three of the so far- the forensic interviewer, Monroe Principal Deloris Spears, and Vocational Supervisor Patricia Jackson.

The defense may call up to 20 of its own witnesses, so the hearing is not likely to end soon, and will probably be continued through Tuesday.
