Rubber-neckers cause multiple wrecks

October 7, 2005

Albany -- The Liberty Bypass in Albany was shutdown for about an hour, after ten cars were involved in a series of crashes about 9:45 Friday morning, on or near the South Jefferson exit ramp.

It started when a car hit a dump truck, which spilled diesel fuel and blocked the ramp. The Four other two-car crashes happened minutes later as drivers looked at the wreck scene and ran into other cars.

Police blocked off the Bypass at the Blaylock Exit, and re-routed traffic into East Albany while the crashes were cleared.

They say it could have been avoided if drivers were not rubber-necking.

"Reduce your speed number one. Just make sure you are attentive to what you are doing, and drive defensively for the next driver also," said APD Cpl. William Dowdell.

Police say three people were taken by ambulance to the hospital. None suffered life threatening injuries. Charges in the wrecks are pending.
