Albany -- The Dougherty high school football team picked up a big 38-31win over undefeated rival Lee County in the Trojan Bowl Friday night.
DHS senior Xavier Cheevers ran for 229 yards and 3 touchdown's in the victory, and for his efforts has been named this week's player of the week.
Dougherty coach Carror Wright says Friday night's win would have been a lot more difficult without Xavier Cheevers.
"No doubt it was a great game. We have to stay on every step of the way. It would have been tough to win that game without the effort Xavier put forth."
Cheevers says his job would have been a lot tougher without the strong play of his offensive line, and his team helped win the award.
"I had the chance and the honor to be rewarded with this last year, so to get it again makes me feel a whole lot better, like the team has accomplished a lot this year."
Coach Wright says, "He's a great kid, and he works hard. Good work habits. Great student. So you pull for someone who's accomplished something as big as this."
This is the second time the senior has won the award, but the first time he's rushed for over 200 yards, and says he's making sure his lineman are happy.
"That's my first 200 yard game, and I have this special thing with my lineman planned out that we haven't achieved that yet, but I was going to take them out to eat."
"That's something I didn't know about, but it's good. It's something we teach, and preach to them to stay together and help each other out," says coach Wright.
Cheevers is wisely taking the big eaters out to a buffett, and looks for the Trojans strong season to continue.
"We'll stick to the game plan, listen to the coaches, and just play. Play as hard as you can."
The win over Lee County improves Dougherty to 4-1 on the season.
They'll play their first region game of the year Friday night at Crisp County.
