Albany -- An Albany man drowned while fishing Sunday afternoon. His wife saw it happen from the bank of the pond.

34 year old Ernest Davis drown in the holding pond just off the Liberty Bypass near Slappey.

Around 12:30 Sunday afternoon Davis was on the rock island when his boat drifted away. His wife said Davis, a strong swimmer, went in the water after it, but then tried to swim back to shore.

Davis' widow Abiola said "He almost made it. And there was nothing I could do. I just stood there and there was nothing I could do. That hurts me the most. Some of the neighbors tried to rescue him, but it was too late."

Firefighters found Davis' body in about 8 feet of water.

He had two children, a three year old daughter and five week old son.
