State employment help

September 6, 2005

Albany -- Hurricane Katrina evacuees need jobs and the state of Georgia is trying to help them.

The Georgia Department of Labor can file unemployment claims for evacuees from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

But they're taking it a step further and helping them find work. State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said "These individuals have advanced degrees. College, PHD's. We've seen lawyers, doctors, engineers, electricians, contractors. You name it, teachers, nurses, are all here in the state looking for jobs."

Evacuees can get help with unemployment insurance and finding jobs by going to any of the 53 Department of Labor career centers across the state.
