Dougherty Schools open to evacuees

September 1, 2005

Albany- Many of those evacuated families have school aged children and they are welcome to attend classes in south Georgia. The Georgia Department of Education asked local school systems to accommodate evacuees.

The Dougherty County System has gotten several calls. Their doors are open for Hurricane victims. Administrators say parents shouldn't worry about having school records.

"What we're asking them to do is contact the public information office and public information or director will contact our deputy superintendent and myself so we can do everything we can," said Dr. Sally Whatley, Dougherty Co. Superintendent.

Dr. Whatley says they've never experienced a situation like this but will work through it so evacuees get a quality education as long as they're in Dougherty County.

You can contact the school at 431-1264.
