Sappington makes GSGA history

September 2, 2005

Albany - Two-time defending champion Spencer Sappington's chances of an unprecedented third straight Georgia State Golf Association Senior Championship appeared slim when he was seven shots out of the lead after shooting a 76 in Wednesday's first round.

Sappington came charging back in the next two rounds to win a record third straight GSGA senior title by one shot over Bill Ploeger of Columbus.

Sappington followed his second round 68 on Thursday with a final round 70 to finish at 214 for the tournament.

Columbus' Bill Ploeger, who missed a 12 foot birdie putt on 18 by millimeters, finished one shot back in second.

Dick Van Leuvan of Roswell finished in third and Walter Burt III of Albany finished in ninth place at 220.
