Wilkes earns GSC honor

August 29, 2005

Valdosta - The Valdosta State Blazers began their national title defense with a 32-10 win over Fort Valley State in Macon Saturday night.

Junior quarterback Barrett Wilkes marked his return to the Blazers starting lineup by completing 22-27 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns against the Wildcats.

The performance of the former Lowndes High Viking earns Wilkes the first Gulf South Conference offensive player of the week award for the 2005 season.

It is the fourth time Barrett Wilkes has won the GSC's offensive player of the week award.

He red-shirted last season when Fabian Walker transferred to Valdosta State from Florida State.

The Blazers host Albany State Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
