BRAC vote could block additional jobs at Albany MCLB

August 24, 2005

Albany -- The Base Realignment and Closure Commission's final recommendation vote Wednesday left the Albany Marine Base open but probably eliminated 134-new jobs expected to come to Albany.

]The BRAC Commission voted to leave the Red River Army Depot open. Some of its jobs could still be realigned. Red River is the current site of most of those 134 jobs the BRAC commission originally recommended moving to Albany.

Wednesday's vote is not a final decision. Albany Chamber of Commerce Military Liaison Jim Taylor said "This was going to be some growth for the community. And don't get us wrong, we were looking forward to it. But it's not going to hurt us. We'd certainly like to have it, and I'm sure Red River is happy to remain open."

The Red River Depot maintains humvees and bradley fighting vehicles for the Army, the same work the Albany Maintenance Center does for the Marines.

The Commission decided the state of the art facility in Texas, built just six years ago, should not be closed.
