Conviction in YMCA embezzlement case

August 23, 2005

Valdosta -  A former landscaper for the Valdosta-Lowndes YMCA is found guilty of embezzling more than $860,000 from the organization.

Wayman Lee Patrick, Junior was convicted of  conspiracy to commit embezzlement and embezzlement from an organization receiving federal money.

Patrick  will be sentenced in about 60 days.

Former Y-M-C-A director Nicky Tampas has also been indicted in the case and will be tried in November.

Prosecutors say between 1999 and 2002,  Tampas took federal money from the YMCA for his own use, and disguised the thefts as legal payments from the business to Patrick and his landscaping employees.
