Pay before you pump

August 22, 2005

Albany - Brij Patel runs the BP at the intersection of Westgate and Dawson in Albany. He says he now only turns on the pumps for regular customers. Everyone else must prepay for gas.

Patel says, "It used to be a lot of young guys, young people would do a drive off, but now after gas prices have gone up, old people, young people, you know, if they don't have money, they'll put the gas in and they'll just keep going."

Patel says drive-offs cost him about $600 every month. If convicted of driving off without paying for gas, you could be fined, have your license suspended and even serve jail time.
