Albany--We all know that blood and platelet donation is crucial in the battle against cancer. One Albany family donated platelets today to help cancer victims in their fight against the disease.

The Benfords are the grandparents of a girl whose cancer is in remission now, and they say it is donations like theirs that help so many. The cancer victim's aunt also donated platelets for the first time.

"It is very important to me, because I have a grandaugter who is now in remission from Burketts lymphoma. So her granddad and her Aunt are all here making it a family affair" said Shirley Benford. Red Cross officials say the Albany area's blood and platelet supply remains at critical levels, and more donations are needed to help those in need.
