Valdosta - People in Lowndes County took time out of their day to remember the fallen National Guardsmen.
About 100 people gathered on the courthouse lawn for a moment of silence Thursday afternoon. The recent casualties in Iraq hit close to home for this community, since two of the fallen soldiers were from Valdosta.
Specialist Ronnie Shelley and Sgt. John Thomas both died last month when a roadside bomb exploded near the humvee they were riding in.
"Its very important, especially with the losses we've experienced over the past few weeks here locally, for us to show support not only to the military here in town and deployed, but also their families," said Paige Dukes.
County commissioners have also placed a memorial on the courthouse lawn in honor of the two soldiers from Valdosta.
