Tifton- Three members of the office, including deputy Mike Purvis were deployed to the Middle East, and say the children they've encountered don't have many toys.

Sheriff Gary Vowell has promised ride one mile on his bicycle for every $10 donation made to purchase teddy bears and soccer balls. The toys will be sent to Purvis who will then distribute them to needy children.

"We have virtually the entire investigative division of the sheriff's office all riding bicycles every night when they get off work about 15 to 20 miles a night in training for this because no one wants to be the first to drop out," says David Haire of the Tift County Sheriff's Office.

Vowell has already pledged to ride from downtown Tifton to Jekyll Island. That's a 132-mile trek. The Bike to the Beach was orginally scheduled to be held on September 24th, but has been changes to September 17th.

For more information about the bike to the beach fundraiser contact the Tift County Sheriff's Office at 229-388-6098.
