Albany- Condemnation signs were posted on the door of the old Mule Barn on Broad Avenue Wednesday.

The Albany-Dougherty Inner City Authority, which owns the building, learned of the condemnation Wednesday afternoon and has 30 days to respond.

Interim Planning and Development Director Tracy Hester says the action was based on a report conducted by Fletcher Engineering.

"Basically condemnation is a life safety issue. That structure sits in a position where it could collapse, could fall. I have no way of knowing if it will stand today or ten years from now. Based on the technical data that I was given by this engineering report something has to happen with it very soon," Hester says.

The report also includes several options for salvaging the building. The engineering firm recommends keeping the facade of the barn, demolishing the rest, and building a replica in its place. Hester says it would take several million dollars to rehabilitate the building to make it habitable.
